I have several guesses. It looks like a cardboard tube, with either tape around it or a slug trail. Or maybe it is a Pilsbury tube of breadsticks. See lots of choices.
Just stumbled upon your blog and found the very first post on it to be interesting. Is it the cardboard tube that the paper towel roll is wrapped around?
